Environmental controlling factors of copepod communities in the Gulf of Tunis (south western Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Ben Lamine, Yosra; Pringault, Olivier; Aissi, Mehdi; Ensibi, Cherif; Mahmoudi, Ezzeddine; Kefi, Ons Daly Yahia; Yahia, Mohamed Nejib Daly.
The copepod community structure and the distribution of the main groups of zooplankton were studied along an inshore-offshore gradient in the Gulf of Tunis during the rainy and dry seasons of 2007-2008. Hydrological parameters were also measured to assess the potential role of abiotic and biotic factors in the distribution of copepod species. The copepod community in the Gulf of Tunis comprises 86 species dominated by Paracalanus parvus, Clausocalanus lividus, Centropages kroyeri and Acartia clausi. Time had a greater influence than space (horizontal and vertical gradients) in shaping the copepod community structure with a significant influence of the seasons; winter (cold and rainy) resulted in hydrological conditions that were strongly different from...

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AFFECTING SEED GERMINATION OF COMMON TEASEL (Dipsacus fullonum) Planta Daninha
DADDARIO,J.F.F.; BENTIVEGNA,D.J.; TUCAT,G.; FERNÁNDEZ,O.A..
ABSTRACT Common teasel is a widespread, invasive species that has been introduced in Buenos Aires province, Argentina, where it alters the species composition of protected areas and native grasslands. A better understanding of seed germination behavior is essential for predicting its invasion potential in new areas and would be useful for developing effective management strategies. This research, conducted under laboratory conditions, evaluated the influence of several environmental factors such as pH, constant temperature, osmotic stress, salt stress and dry storage, on germination and rate of germination of common teasel seed. Between-year variation in germination responses was also examined. Seed germination was not affected by different pH levels....

Environmental physiology of the bananas (Musa spp.) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Turner,David W.; Fortescue,Jeanie A.; Thomas,Dane S..
The bananas are thought to be particularly sensitive to changes in the environment. This review considers some historical and recent investigations into the response of the leaf, root and reproductive system to the environment. Monteith's analysis of the response of plants to intercepted radiation is appropriate for analyzing the productivity of bananas and plantains. The banana is sensitive to soil water deficits, and expanding tissues such as emerging leaves and growing fruit are among the first to be affected. As soil begins to dry, stomata close and leaves remain highly hydrated, probably through root pressure. Productivity is affected because of the early closure of stomata. We find the common belief that bananas use large amounts of water does not...

Vicente, N; Riva, A; Butler, A.
Breathing exchanges of Pinna nobilis L. are studied in situ and in the laboratory with two methods. First method consist in introducing samples of Pinna under a 40l plexiglass bell equipped with haps. The bell is positionned by diving. The consumption of oxygen is observed with water samples and the oxygen concentration is measured with an electronic oxymeter. Experiments which are carried out during nycthemeral cycles are reproduced in the laboratory with the same type of bell. A second method carry into effect an apparatus more sophisticated, who put into circulation a current of water in an airtight thermostated cellule, where a specimen of young Pinna is introduced. This sample is gradually adaptated to the conditions of the medium. Breathing...

Evidence for northward expansion of Antarctic Bottom Water mass in the Southern Ocean during the last glacial inception ArchiMer
Govin, Aline; Michel, Elisabeth; Labeyrie, Laurent; Waelbroeck, Claire; Dewilde, Fabien; Jansen, Eystein.
We investigated deep water changes in the Southern Ocean during the last glacial inception, in relationship to surface hydrology and global climatology, to better understand the mechanisms of the establishment of a glacial ocean circulation. Changes in benthic foraminiferal delta(13)C from three high-resolution cores are compared and indicate decoupled intermediate and deep water changes in the Southern Ocean. From the comparison with records from the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, and the Southern Ocean, we show that the early southern deep water delta(13)C drop observed at the MIS 5.5-5.4 transition occurred before any significant reduction of North Atlantic Deep Water ventilation. We propose that this drop is linked to the northward expansion of poorly...

Evidence of vertical migration in the Ipanema bat Pygoderma bilabiatum (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae: Stenodermatinae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Esbérard,Carlos E. L.; Lima,Isaac P. de; Nobre,Pedro H.; Althoff,Sérgio L.; Jordão-Nogueira,Tássia; Dias,Daniela; Carvalho,Fernando; Fabián,Marta E.; Sekiama,Margareth L.; Sobrinho,Artur Stanke.
Migration is defined as a seasonal and cyclic population movement observed in all animal classes and studied mainly in vertebrates. A considerable part of the knowledge on migration comes from birds, for which migration is an important aspect of their biology. In the case of bats, females usually migrate larger distances than males in some species. The present study analyzes the seasonal occurrence of Pygoderma bilabiatum (Wagner, 1843) at different elevations, in order to test for a pattern that evidences migration, using data from the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A total of 529 specimens of P. bilabiatum were captured. Pygoderma bilabiatum seems to be more...

Evolution du pH et de la température au cours de la transformation artisanale du cymbium (voluté). Essai sur les perspectives de valorisation du produit transformé OceanDocs
Diouf, A..

ArchiMer
Barnabe, G.; Tournamille, J.-c..
Mature eggs were expressed from captured female and fertilised artificially with slightly bloody sperm, in dry conditions or in a humid atmosphere, both at 13 degree C. The best incubation conditions proved to be 13 degree C, with streptomycin and penicillin. Another sample was kept at 18 degree C. Hatching occurred after 4 or 5 days, larvae showing positive phototropism. The system of renewal of water and artificial food is described. The embryonic reserve drop of lipid disappeared between day 14 and 16. Observations on larvae were like previous ones, but live larvae had larger mouths than had fixed specimens, and it was found that temperatures of 13 degree C or 18 degree C were suitable beyond the egg stage. A sudden change in temperature caused by a...

Experimental dryer design for agricultural products REA
GONELI,ANDRÉ L. D.; MARTINS,ELTON A. S.; JORDAN,RODRIGO A.; GEISENHOFF,LUCIANO O.; GARCIA,RENATO T..
ABSTRACT This study consisted of designing and building an experimental dryer that allows working with different temperatures and velocities of the air, aiming to perform studies on thin- and thick-layer drying of agricultural products. The project was divided into three stages: heat source designing, dryer geometric parameters, and fan selection to meet operational demand. Heating was made by a set of six electrical resistances totaling 12 kW and the drying bed in thin layer was composed of two trays with diameter of 0.20 m. Operational demands were met using a centrifugal fan with a power rating of 735.5 W. The used methodology was able to size the experimental dryers for thin- and thick-layer drying working at distinct temperatures and air velocities.

Expolinear model on soybean growth in Argentina and Brazil Ciência Rural
Confalone,Adriana Elisabet; Bernardes,Marcos Silveira; Costa,Luiz Claudio; Righi,Ciro Abbud; Dourado Neto,Durval; Martin,Thomas Newton; Manfron,Paulo Augusto; Pereira,Carlos Rodrigues.
Predicting crop growth and yield with precision are one of the main concerns of the agricultural science. For these purpose mechanistic models of crop growth have been developed and tested worldwide. The feasibility of an expolinear model for crop growth was evaluated on predicting growth modification on soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) of determined and undetermined growth cultivars, submitted to water restrictions imposed on different phenological stages. An experiment was carried out in Azul/Argentina and in Viçosa/Brazil during the growing seasons (1997/1998, 1998/1999 and 2002/2003). The expolinear model was adjusted to the dry-matter data obtained from each treatment. The model showed sensibility of Rm (maximum relative growth rate of the culture - g...

Factors affecting Cyperus difformis seed germination and seedling emergence Planta Daninha
Derakhshan,A.; Gherekhloo,J..
Specific knowledge about the dormancy, germination, and emergence patterns of weed species aids the development of integrated management strategies. Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effect of several environmental factors on seed germination and seedling emergence of Cyperus difformis. Germination of freshly harvested seeds was inhibited by darkness; however, when seeds were subsequently transferred to complete light they germinated readily. Our results showed that 2 wk of cold stratification overcome the light requirement for germination. Seeds of C. difformis were able to germinate over a broad range of temperatures (25/15, 30/20, 35/25, and 40/30 ºC day/night). The response of germination rate to temperature was described as a...

Factors influencing primary production of seagrass beds (Zostera noltii Hornem.) in the Thau lagoon (French Mediterranean coast) ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Auby, Isabelle; Dagault, Francoise.
The primary production and the respiration of Zostera noltii beds in the Thau lagoon were studied by means of the benthic bell jar technique, Concurrently, environmental data (temperature, light and nutrients) as well as morphological data of seagrass meadows (leaf width and height, density of shoots, above/below-ground biomass ratio) were collected with the purpose of explaining most of the observed variations in metabolism, Seagrass plus epiphyte respiration rates were influenced mainly by the water temperature, showing a typical exponential response to an increase in temperature, Surprisingly, measurements of production rates were not related to incoming light intensities recorded at the seagrass canopy level, An equation frequently used for terrestrial...

Feet, heat and scallops: what is the cost of anthropogenic disturbance in bivalve aquaculture? ArchiMer
Robson, Anthony A.; Halsey, Lewis G.; Chauvaud, Laurent.
The effects of unnatural disturbances on the behaviour and energetics of animals are an important issue for conservation and commercial animal production. Biologging enables estimation of the energy costs of these disturbances, but not specifically the effect these costs have on growth; a key outcome measure for animal farming enterprises. We looked at how natural and anthropogenically induced activity and energy expenditure of king scallops Pecten maximus varies with temperature. These data were then used to model growth time of king scallops reared in an aquaculture facility under different temperatures and anthropogenic disturbance levels. The scallops exhibited a typical total metabolic rate (MR)-temperature curve, with a peak reached at a middling...
